February in the GardenWelcome to the February edition of Fiveways Gardens.
How about that? December was really cold - almost like winter, you might say. How refreshing; the seasons behaving themselves. So, you know what happens this year? We get that long hot summer! Hoorah.
January in the GardenHappy New Year to you all and here's to 2009 giving us a hot, sunny summer with acres and acres of blue skies - it sure feels like we deserve it, after 2 rubbish summers.
Until the lazy days of summer, there are a few things to get on with. For instance, how about a new garden project for this year?
December in the GardenThere's now fairly conclusive evidence that deciduous trees, shrubs and hardy herbaceous perennials that get in the ground now do better than those left until the new year. So, if like me, you've bought plants over the past month or 2 but somehow, not quite got round to actually planting them..
November in the Garden I'm happy to say that some of you were inspired by my suggestion last month of a Fiveways plant swap and / or gardening group. Local resident, Sam Hart, has offered to try to organise a meeting of any likeminded gardening folk out there who might want to meet up and natter about possibilities...
October in the Garden Friends and family have been asking if the so-called 'credit crunch' is having any impact locally in the world of garden design and landscaping. Well, so far, I've noticed a few subtle changes but nothing too major. Interestingly, not all the changes have been negative either.
September in the Garden I've got a couple of clients that are going to be growing apples and pears for the first time so I thought I'd share some thoughts on this. More of us are interested in growing at least some of our food, and I think trained fruit on a south or west-facing wall is a superb way of doing it because 1) it looks great 2) it's easy 3) it doesn't take up much room and 4) it's good for the soul.
August in the Garden A few weeks ago, a phone call out of the blue had me blushing, and it's not what you think. It was a local Fiveways resident asking if I'd judge a "Best front garden" competition in a forthcoming street party.
July in the Garden Welcome to the July edition of Fiveways Gardens. July is a month for thinking about filling the inevitable gaps that will be emerging, and sitting back and enjoying the fruits of your labour and musing on what you might do differently next year. With this in mind, I thought I'd share some inspiration I've gained in visiting various gardens over the past few weeks.
June in the Garden Welcome to the June edition of Fiveways gardens. After some warmth and a bit of rain, everything in the garden is in full swing. Lilacs are blooming wonderfully, filling the air with their fantastic perfume...
May in the GardenWelcome to the May edition of Fiveways gardens. What a difference a year makes. Last year, April was the sunniest, loveliest month of the year. This year, apparently record low temperatures. Lawns I re-seeded 4 weeks ago, have still yet to germinate...
April in the GardenWelcome to the April edition of Fiveways Gardens
If you haven't already, why not make your first visit to the garden centres and nurseries to start stocking new beds or containers, or replace tired old plants. All the new furniture and pots will be coming out right now in time for the official launch of the gardening season.
March in the GardenWelcome to the March edition of Fiveways Gardens
It's time to spruce up the garden in time for the major burst of growth that's coming over the next few months. Somehow, the fresh new leaves of spring never look great set amongst the brown decaying mush of the previous years growth...
